Student #8 Testimonial - "Gatekeeping"

Student: "Like, when people say 'food insecurity' it sound--that, in itself I feel like kind of is a, um, is a gate-keeping mechanism; it's like, well who's allowed--who is food insecure and like what's to say me? Um, and I guess I've been, like it's my understanding that like, um, there are, like, different things that can make someone food insecure like maybe not having enough money to buy food, or like, having access to enough food or access to, like, nutritional food cause that's, like, another thing where it's like, just because you have food doesn't mean that, like, you're getting, like, the nutrients that you need. Um, and I guess, like. . .Yeah: I've been, like, on and off foodstamps a lot; maybe like five or six times? Um, as an adult, and like I've never made over, like, twenty thousand dollars a year so, like,"

Interviewer: "Mm-hmm."

Student: "It's just. . .Yeah; sometimes I sacrifice, like, food for other things, stuff like that. Um, yeah; something that was interesting today, like, I wouldn't say, I guess it is like a food insecurity issue is that like, I was like 'oh, I need to go get lunch,' and then there's like, almost literally nowhere for me to eat lunch, and then like, I was able to get, like two things just because they're like 'oh we're closing up, can you grab something,' and then I did, so, um, yeah."
